High blood pressure is on the increase daily and a lot of people have been on medications daily with little or no improvements. It’s even worse to realize that most of these medications not only waste time and funds but also bring side effects and weaken or damage some organs in the future.
Realizing this, we decided to write on tips to control high blood pressure naturally.
9. Reduce your sodium intake.
There is a high intake of salt due to processed and prepared foods which lead to an increase in blood pressure and heart diseases like stroke. In case you have high blood pressure, it is advisable to replace processed foods with fresh ones, herbs, and spices, rather than salt. Also, ensure you reduce the quantity of salt you put in your food when cooking (or possibly avoid putting salt) as this would also help to an extent to lower the high blood pressure.
8. Eat more potassium-rich foods.
Potassium helps the body to get rid of sodium (salt) and ease pressure on the blood vessels. Do well to eat fewer processed foods and more fresh whole foods. The following are foods high in potassium: leafy and green vegetables, tomatoes, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. Also, eat fruits such as melons, bananas, grapes, and oranges.
7. Decrease Caffeine
Caffeine tends to cause a short increase in blood pressure, especially when it is taken before or after physical activity, even if you don’t have high blood pressure. The blood pressure response to caffeine differs from person to person.
Some researchers believe that caffeine could block a hormone that helps keep your arteries widened. Others think that caffeine causes your adrenal glands to release more adrenaline, which causes your blood pressure to increase.
6. Reduce weight
Being overweight is one of the major causes of high blood pressure. This is because being overweight means more blood is needed to supply oxygen and nutrients to your body. Since there is more blood flowing through your blood vessels and arteries, you can expect there to be more pressure inside them. It is necessary to work on your weight and ensure you are not obese or overweight. You can start with a simple weight loss activity we have provided for you at the end of this article. 5. Increase activity – Walk and exercise regularly
The soothing effect of exercise on blood pressure cannot be over-emphasized as it is one of the best things to do to lower high blood pressure. Engaging in regular exercise helps the heart become stronger and more efficient at blood pumping, which lowers the pressure in the arteries.
Consider moderate exercises like walking, jogging, and running per week.
4. Limit alcohol
Blood pressure levels may rise as alcohol stimulates a joint reaction of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Drinking alcohol can certainly raise blood pressure levels to very unhealthy and risky levels. As much as you can, ensure you limit your alcohol intake or avoid alcohol.
3. Stop smoking
Smoking has long been known for causing an increase in heart rate and blood pressure level increase during smoking. Both smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke increase the risk for the buildup of fatty substances (plaque) inside the arteries (atherosclerosis) — a process that high blood pressure is known to accelerate. Every time you smoke, it also causes a temporary increase in blood pressure.
Be sure to run far away from smoke and smoking areas!
2. Manage stress
Stress has proven to be a long-time cause of high blood pressure.
