Stress reducing activities at work.

It’s a common thing to experience stress every now and then, with all the hustle and bustle, it almost seems unavoidable. This leaves the option of at least figuring how to manage it.

Stress not only causes physical damage, but even more of psychological or emotional damage. It also affects productivity and general well-being and can leave your body defense system in a weak state for dangerous ailments.

Everyone experiences stress to some degree and the way you respond to stress makes a big difference to your overall well-being. Especially in a working environment that can bring about stress, it is important to have some stress reducing activities.

There is no particular activity that generally works for everyone, instead, everyone has their own unique solution that works for them. This can help you manage it, and possibly, you can have a favorite that helps you the most.

Some really helpful options are:

Take a stroll

This especially works for static position workers. It is important to at least take a stroll for a few minutes because staying in a position for long hours may leave some parts of your body asleep. It can also cause improper blood flow and may leave you restless. You can always take a quick stroll, walk slow and possible listen to music while at it. Please ensure your music is not on high volume so that you are still conscious of your environment while taking strolls.

Stretch that body

Stretching is a very helpful activity to reduce stress and it comes with other benefits. When you’re experiencing stress, there’s a good chance your muscles are tense. That’s because your muscles tend to tighten up in response to physical and emotional stress. Focus on areas of your body where you tend to hold your stress, such as your neck, shoulders, and upper back.

Not only can stretching help reduce stress, but it can help increase your flexibility, which is an important factor of fitness, posture improvement, body aches reduction, and more. Stretching also improves blood flow to muscles and assists in healing and preventing back pains.

Take a Nap

A nap is a light or brief sleep especially during the day. Sometimes it might just be that your body system’s battery is low and needs a little nap to briefly recharge. Napping boosts your memory, frees up your creativity, and reduces stress. A nap daily helps you stay healthy and keeps you ready for the second half of the day.

Reach out for humor

Maybe you need some jokes to lighten you up, something comical and entertaining. You can always search through social media for comical videos and more, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube are great avenues to get these. Don’t forget to share what you find to friends and family that might also need some laughs.

Some other times, you can go through old videos and images of happy memories that lift your spirit.

Get a stress ball

Stress ball / stress reliever ball / anger ball, is a softball that could be squeezed, rolled or thrown.

Squeezing, rolling, or throwing a stress ball can have a huge effect on your mind, body and mood. It can send happy signals to your brain, which can be transmitted over an unhappy mood.

Some benefits include:

  1. Tension release – When you tighten your clenched hand around an anxiety ball, the muscles in your hand and wrist tighten up. When you let go of the ball, the muscles unwind which can rid you of strains, stress, and anxiety.
  2. Release of important chemicals in your body – After repeatedly squeezing the therapy ball, your hand and arm will begin to ache. This will cause your muscles to output a message to your brain. Your brain then releases endorphins. This is a chemical that the body uses to relieve stress.
  3. Mini workout option – Exercise is a great way to release stress. Squeezing a ball is a form of exercise for your arm.
  4. Better thinking – Using a stress ball can increase your thinking power! The squeezing motion causes an increase in blood circulation and also oxygen delivery which helps you think better.

Read or write, but never sing

Are you in love with reading? Just pick up that novel, article, newspaper, letter or journal. Go ahead, read some of it and it may help you feel calm and relieved. Reading helps reduce stress, decrease blood pressure and improve heart rate which will release tension in your muscles.

However, some rather prefer writing. Writing could be therapeutic and help reduce the stress you feel. It’s an opportunity to detail your feelings and express yourself in notes. As for singing, even though it could be a stress relief option for some people, it is advised to only select this option where there is no tendency of causing discomfort or disturbance to people.

Catch up with family and friends

Sometimes you just need to talk to someone or even check up on someone who might be having a bad day. Who better than family and friends, especially when you might be too tired after work to know how your loved ones are doing. Take a break, call a loved one, you can never tell how much it will be appreciated or even how they will in turn brighten up your day.

Take a moment to snack healthy

Food is always the answer even when there is no question. Sometimes you might not even know you are stressed until you feed on some good healthy meals and feel better. You can always plan for these meals to be available and taken during that break you deserve. No matter what, ensure you are always on the healthy side when taking these meals. Great and easily accessible options are the likes of smoothies, fruit salads, parfaits, pasta with vegetable sauce, Friska wellness ice tea and a lot more.
